Some of you may be too young to know who Gracie Allen was (well, she was before MY time as well), but I remember seeing clips of Gracie and her husband, comedian George Burns, many times while I was growing up in the 60s.
Friday, May 7, 2010 at 9:14AM I’ve now spent over a month working as a high school teacher and I’ve been thinking about all of the people who told me, “Most teachers feel like quitting the first year, sometimes into their second or third years.” Many people have also told me that they didn’t feel they had a handle on teaching until years after they started.

I’ve never written about it before and I’ve rarely talked about it, even with my own family. It’s only now, nearly 20 years later, that I’m reckoning with the emotional distress that infertility has caused in my life and marriage.
Saturday, April 10, 2010 at 10:39AM My first week of teaching high school students is behind me. How do I feel? Depleted--emotionally, physically, and mentally. I knew this was going to be a challenge and a steep learning curve, and it is. I knew that the certification class, the books, and all of the advice given to me by fellow teachers would not be enough to cut it once I got into the classroom, in charge of a room full of teenagers. I knew that the only way for me to become a good teacher was to just get in there and do it.

I’d like to kick myself for that now. Apparently, my fragile ego just wasn’t ready to take the hits. And at this point in my life, I’m on to other things.
Saturday, March 13, 2010 at 2:00PM Sometimes even bad days end up being great. So it was with a day I experienced a week ago. I had been asked to substitute for the teacher who I will replace in April (she will be on maternity leave April through June). The classes I will cover are retail store management, sales and marketing, and accounting.
